My private practice is (again / still / definitely) open for business!

Although I have had to radically prune the amount of time I have spent with private clients over the last couple of years because of commitments in other roles, this has eased up a little now. I’m able to offer remote support for families of unsettled babies, antenatal preparation via video call to equip expectant parents in getting their breastfeeding journey off to the best start, and in some cases also home visits for infant feeding support postnatally. My NHS role continues, with a pan-LMNS revised infant feeding policy and guidelines suite, a new CMPA pathway, a local infant feeding strategy, and maternity/neonatal/health visiting/family hubs combined Unicef UK Baby Friendly Initiative Stage 2 accreditation to work towards for my Trust in the next 6 months. Exciting times!

I continue in my role as Clinical Director for @anyaforhealth now ably assisted by clinical leads for both Parenting and Women’s Health. Please ask if you would like to know more about what we are doing to support women and families.

And I’m now into the third year of my PhD looking at how we can best support the families of unsettled babies in universal services - this month I am recruiting participants and stakeholders for my participatory action research, and finishing my systematic review. Again, please ask for more information if you would like to be involved with my research into how we can improve the wellbeing of the families of unsettled babies.

As I’ve previously mentioned, I am doing a PhD at the University of Central Lancashire into how frontline health professionals can effectively support families with unsettled babies.

Previously, I have contributed to 3 infant feeding related NICE Guidelines and 3 infantile colic related Cochrane systematic reviews, in addition to working with families of unsettled babies in my private practice over the last decade.

As a result of my experience I can clearly see that there is a gap in the evidence base around what works for families when babies are basically healthy, well babies who are unhappy or uncomfortable - but not seriously unwell.

I hope to address this ‘missing middle’ with my research, and am looking for ‘expert by experience’ families and healthcare practitioners who would be willing to share their expertise and time with me to review the existing evidence, and co-develop strategies for health care practitioners to use with families.

I have had the most lovely message from another IB

I have had the most lovely message from another IBCLC who has viewed the webinar I recorded last month for @breastfeeding.conferences on supporting the families of unsettled babies. She writes that she has a number of children herself, and that her youngest has been a real challenge.

“I just finished your unsettled babies webinar for breastfeeding conferences AU and wanted to pop in to thank you for sharing your hard work in this area! I am an IBCLC and also a mom of four. My youngest is almost a year old and our first truly ‘fussy’ baby. I have never felt so seen before this! I wish I had come across it earlier on so that I could apply some of it to my own experience, but it will definitely shape the way I approach my clients with fussy babies in the future. I feel like we have focused so much on solving the issue and the crying and making it stop. I wish someone had held my hand, told me it’s not my fault and that I am a good mom, and asked me how I’m taking care of myself during this time. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your insight with our profession!!”

The conference series is called “research into practice” and so I used some of the research forming the background of my PhD, and pulled some of the information I have learned whilst doing my systematic review, to share in the presentation.

I’ve had a couple of bits of positive feedback about it, and I’m so pleased it has been useful !

now, onto my ethics approval application, and back to writing …
